How well do you know your lipsticks?
When it comes to putting on lipstick for many of us we grab something that looks fairly nice in a colour and at a price we like.
However, sometimes taking a little extra time to consider what type of lipstick you are buying can have other benefits than just adding colour to your lips.
There are various types on the market from moisturising and nourishing to long-lasting, gloss and matte.
So how do you choose? There’s no right or wrong type, style or colour of lipstick you should be wearing and a lot of it is to do with style choice.
Here are some of the types of lipstick available and their benefits:
-
Gloss
As one of the most popular lipstick choices gloss tends to be the “go to” style for most people due to how it can make the lips shine.
However, gloss lipstick is also known for being able to improve the dimension of depth. It also tends to be favoured by women with thin and small lips because it can enhance the lips.
What’s great about gloss lipsticks is that they can be worn alone or with a traditional lipstick to add a new look.
-
Matte
Believe it or not with matte lipstick your lips will look younger and smoother. People who normally choose matte lipsticks are either looking for a more natural feel or a bold, brash statement of vibrant colour.
Matte lipsticks can also make fuller lips look slightly thinner and tend to stay on the lips for longer periods of time also.
-
Pearl, Frosted & Shimmer
When you use either a pearl or frosted lipstick it gives the lips the feeling of sparkling and glistening. The way it works is that pearl and frosted styles of lipstick reflect light. However, due to the compounds used they can cause lips to be dry risking cracking and in some cases making them feel heavy.
It’s a good idea to moisturise your lips well when using these styles. For most people the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
Shimmer lipsticks have an opalescent finish and make great choices for evening wear as they always look good under artificial light and can even make your lips appear fuller.
-
Satin & Sheer
The great thing about satin and sheer lipsticks is that they moisturise and nourish the lips giving them a real shiny and glossy feel. It’s important to know that these lipsticks very often contain a great deal of oily ingredients and sometimes can look darker on the package than they are on the lips.
The positives of these lipsticks is that they give off a beautiful sexy and seductive look and will keep your lips well moisturised. Be prepared though to reapply throughout the night, they don’t tend to stay in place and offer little coverage. Sometimes it’s good to use them with a base colour.
-
Long Lasting & Transfer Resistant
When you have a busy day ahead and don’t have time to reapply or worry about what’s going on on your lips it’s definitely a good idea to invest in a long lasting / transfer resistant lipstick. They’re resilient, usually contain moisturiser and tend to be a favourite of women in busy jobs.
-
Moisturising
If you have dry lips then it’s a no brainer, you should definitely invest in a moisturising lipstick. They will help to keep you soft and smooth and usually contain ingredients such as aloe, vitamin E and/or glycerin.
The lipsticks usually have a nice subtle shine to them giving lips a sensual wet look.
-
Cream
If you have small lips then a cream lipstick is definitely a make-up bag must. While cream lipsticks are not shiny in their look their formula can give a real smooth look and feel to the lips.
It’s a good idea to have some lip gloss on hand incase you want a shinier feel. Be careful though, sometimes cream lipsticks can cause dry lips.
Top Tips For Lipstick Application:
- Make your lipstick last longer by applying your lipliner as a base before application. If you’re using natural colours you can get a nude liner.
- When it comes to liners, stick to light with light and dark with dark, mixing and matching just doesn’t work.
- If you’re over 50 it’s a good idea to steer clear of gloss and matte, creams work really well for lips that usually need a little more care and attention.
- If you have dry or chapped lips simply gently exfoliate with a damp cloth.
- When applying lipstick, it’s a good idea to use a lipstick brush, it gives you better control and makes it last longer.
